The Missing 24hrs!! Maybe....

Dumbledore tells Harry that Snape is the one to go to when you need help regarding the Dark Arts, like if you have been injured by a curse....

Dumbledore goes to Snape sometime during the summer between Harry's 5th and 6th years. He's injured while destroying the ring horcrux, and he goes to Snape (still at Hogwarts, possibly about to leave for Spinner's End) for help.

When Katie Bell is injured by the opal necklace, a cursed object, McGonagall has Filch take the necklace to Snape for inspection.

What if this is a clue about the missing 24hrs after the attack on the Potters?

Imagine this senario:

  • Voldemort attacks the Potters. James dies from an AK, Lily makes her choice and dies by AK, and the AK cast at Harry backfires. Other things happen, too, like the house falling to ruins.
  • Someone is there to witness the attack and quickly informs Dumbledore.

  • Dumbledore sends Hagrid to get Harry out of the house and tells him to take Harry to Snape for inspection. (We're definitely dealing with a dark curse here.)

  • Hagrid shows up at Godric's Hollow, meets up with Sirius and borrows the bike, then takes Harry away from the crime scene before the Muggles show up .

  • This brings Harry out of Godric's Hollow (wherever it is) and takes him to...well, Spinner's End, perhaps? The clues about Spinner's End suggest either Wales or the environs around Manchester... However, Snape tells Bellatrix he was at Hogwarts, and since it was the middle of term at school, it makes sense for Snape to be at Hogwarts, not Spinner's End...unless Dumbledore asked Snape to leave the castle and go to Spinner's End (or elsewhere) to help him....

  • Snape observes Harry for several hours and possibly performs some tests (like a healer or doctor would), then he contacts Dumbledore to say that, except for a nasty cut on his forehead, Harry seems healthy and can be placed with his relatives. (I'm assuming here that Snape has at least some idea of Dumbledore's plans to place Harry with his aunt... and might know about the blood magic Dumbledore uses to seal Harry's protection at #4 Privet Drive.) Alternate senario: Harry's injuries are more severe than a cut on the forehead, and Snape stops the spread of something, much like he later does for Dumbledore and Katie Bell....

  • Hagrid then takes Harry from wherever Snape was to Surrey. Like Moody in OotP, Hagrid might take a winding route, trying to throw off the enemy....

Freaky idea, but plausible. Nowhere in canon does it say Hagrid went directly from Godric's Hollow to Privet Drive in Surrey.

Hmm... so Snape was 'eavesdropping' at the Hog's Head when Trelawney was there, and he had been 'looking for work', when he 'overheard' the prophecy and 'took' it to Voldy.

Now, which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Did Voldy send him to Hogwarts to spy before this? Or after he 'brought' the prophecy to him?

When did Severus 'turn'? I believe he is good.. so when did that happen?

It'd make sense, if Snape was bad, that he'd pretended to turn, whenever it was he got hired. But, with the end of HBP, I just really think Sev's good.

So when did Voldy send him?

I can see this as a contrivance of DD's.

Think about it. Sev comes for repentance, probably before the day of the prophecy. DD hears the prophecy, and stages a few 'memories' to show Voldy, and keep Trelawney in line.

This could also mean that Voldy had sent him, Sev converted, then this was staged.. I dunno. But it'd make a great memory for Voldy!! (I believe in staged memories for the Occlumens).

SO.... the memory is staged.. and Sev gets the job.

Which would add up to Sev being available to heal Harry after Godric's Hollow.

Now. I know you have heard of Severitus. Her theory has made fanfic history (much like WIKTT). Rowling said that Snape does have a daughter. Just a thought.

Something still isn't jiving though, with the idea of when Sev converted. I'm hoping it was while he was a 'fresh' DE, very early on. I can't see as it'd work later, with regards to the prophecy or the attack at GH.

OOH, there is one glaring mistake in your comment: Jo answered in her FAQ that Snape does NOT have a daughter. Jo didn't say whether Snape had a son. I have things to say about a possible son of Severus, but I'll have to address this wild topic later.

The only reason I wanted to place Harry with Snape before he went to the Dursleys, well, OK -- two or three reasons:

1] If Dumbledore did not personally inspect baby Harry before he arrived at #4 Privet Drive, then how would Dumbledore know what to say in reply to McGonagall's questions about Harry's scar/cut, etc? Hagrid is not too well trained in D.A.D.A., since he was expelled in his third year.

2-ish] Snape is the go-to wizard for info on the Dark Arts, so it makes sense to have him examine Harry and determine whether the cut/scar could be healed/removed, and how it was caused.

3] If Snape inspected Harry and made sure he was okay, then Snape would be showing trustworthiness. Another reason for Dumbledore to trust him.

I don't think Snape's memories are staged, and I think Trelawney's memories are real, too. The only one who might have an altered memory is Dumbledore, but it could just be that he's flat-out lying to Harry, to keep Harry from finding more reasons to hate Snape so much....

Here's my latest take on the whole "Snape's the eavesdropper" issue: Snape was eavesdropping, but not because Voldemort expressly told him to spy at the Hog's Head that day. Like Wormtail in HBP, Snape had developed a habit of listening at doors, since he might hear something interesting, whether it would help Voldemort or not. Snape did hear the entire prophesy (as Trelawney shows us, though she doesn't understand the implications of what she's said). Also as Trelawney clues us into, Snape wasn't immediately kicked out of the Hog's Head but was brought into the opened doorway of Trelawney's room. I think that Dumbledore interrogated Snape to find out what he'd heard. Either Snape lies (using Occlumency) to Dumbledore, or he admits what he's heard. If he's lying to Dumbledore, then Snape makes the personal decision to give Voldemort only the first half of the prophesy, setting his "master" up for defeat. If Snape is truthful to Dumbledore, then Dumbledore offers Snape protection in exchange for having him give Voldemort only the first half of the prophesy, again leading Voldemort to his own destruction. It's really a matter of who's the bigger spinner, Snape or Dumbledore.... Who's idea was it to seek the D.A.D.A. position? We'd all initially say "Voldemort". However, Dumbledore knew Voldemort wanted the post, so Dumbledore could have had Snape suggest to Voldemort that he send Snape to apply for the post. Remember, Snape wasn't hired the same time Trelawney was. He was hired almost 2 years later, just before the attack on the Potters. Snape would have the Potions Master post (as well as Dumbledore's protection) and continue to seek the D.A.D.A. position, and Voldemort would hold the belief that it was for his personal benefit. Truely, Snape got Potions Master post after divulging to Dumbledore who Voldemort's target was: Harry Potter. Snape couldn't gain Dumbledore's trust with a mere sob story (like he tells Narcissa and Bellatrix) but with actions showing that he was truely repentant.

I'm not sure if "turn" describes what Snape did. I have a feeling he was never loyal to Voldemort. He might have been loyal (the lapdog Sirius accuses him of being) to Lucius Malfoy and joined the DE's in Lucius's footsteps. He was probably keeping his eyes (and his ears) open for a chance to escape in safety. Regulus failed to remain alive (for long) after defecting, and Snape refused to suffer the same fate.

Personally, I think seeing himself receive an award, like the Order of Merlin, First Class, is Snape's ultimate goal... what he would potentially see in the Mirror of Erised. It would be for masterminding the defeat of Voldemort, Harry being his pawn -- his weapon. To Snape, even Dumbledore might have been a pawn.

Harry needs to speak to Aberforth Dumbldedore and get his account of the night Snape eavesdropped on Albus Dumbledore and Trelawney. As Albus Dumbledore said (when telling Harry how Mundungus was banned from the Hog's Head) Aberforth has a very long memory. He could be key in figuring out what Snape heard, what Dumbledore did before Snape was "thrown out", and why Voldemort only heard the first part of the prophesy. Aberforth might also be privvy to how Snape eventually got the Potions Master position, as well as other info about "- that aweful boy -" Severus....
